Exopholis hypoleuca Beetle, Sumatra Indonesia

Photos in this post were taken in Bengkulu Sumatra Indonesia. This shiny brown beetle is from the family of Scarabaeidae under genus of Exopholis. The species name is Exopholis hypoleuca (Wiedemann, 1819).

This beetle has dark brown color of head, shiny redish brown color of pronotum and scutellum, shiny light brown elytra with some dark brown color near the margin. The under side of abdomen is white. The legs are brown with fine short white hair. It has brown lammelate antennae. The size is about 25mm.

The larva of this beetle could cause the damage for some agricultural plantation. It is reported that the larva to be the pest of maize, indian galanga, soybean and ginger plantatation. But the larva also believed by the local community of Java island to be rich in nutrients and protein that is useful  for growth and health of children.
