Sugarcane White Grub Beetle (Lepidiota stigma), Sumatra Indonesia

Photos in this post were taken in Bengkulu Sumatra Indonesia. This large beetle is from the family of Scarabaeidae under genus of Lepidiota. The species name is Lepidiota stigma (Fabricius, 1798).

This beetle has dull brown head, pronotum sutellum and elytra. Dark brown eyes and lamellate antennae. There are white spot near the tip of elytra. The leg is dark brown with some short white hair on it. The body is in ellips shape. The size is about 45mm long.

This larva of this beetle is considered a major pest in sugarcane plantation. The well known name for its larva is sugarcane white grub. This white grub also cause extensive damage to maize in river bed areas having loose sandy soil.
