Death's Head Moth (Acherontia lachesis), Sumatra Indonesia


Photos in this post were taken in Bengkulu SUmatra Indonesia. This moth has the scary common name : The death's head moth. It is from the family of Sphingidae under genus of Acherontia. The species name is Acherontia lachesis (Fabricius, 1798).



This moth is recognized by the mark of the thorax which resemble to the picture of a man skull. The color of the upperside of fore wing is dark brown from the base to about 2/3 part of wing. It is bordered with white narrow zigzagged line before the light brown color to the end of fore wing. The hindwing is orange with some black marks. The uppeside of abdomen has blue and black bands. The wingspan is about 140mm.
