Rhinoceros Beetle (Xylotrupes gideon) Female, Sumatra Indonesia


Photos in this post were taken in Bengkulu Sumatra Indonesia. This is the female of rhinoceros beetle. This beetle is from the family of Scarabaeidae under genus of Xylotrupes. The scientific name for this species is Xylotrupes gideon (Guérin-Méneville, 1830).





This unique insect has horn-like at its head and pronotum for the male. Both horns are bifurcated. All of the body especially the elytra has a shiny dark brown color.


The size of this rhinoceros beetle in this post is about 50mm. The research has proven that this kind of beetle is enable to lift the weight 100 times its own weight.
