Batik Golden Orb Weaver Spider (Nephila antipodiana) in Sumata Indonesia


Photos of this spider were taken in Bengkulu Sumatra Indonesia. This spider has the common name of Batik Golden Web Spider. It is from the family of Nephilidae under genus of Nephila. The species name is Nephila antipodiana (Walckenaer, 1842)


This spider has dark brown color legs, dark brown backgroun color of head, thorax and abdomen. The upper side of abdomen has the combination of light and dark yellow spots and marks over the dark brown background color resembling the "Batik" pattern which is a kind of drawing art in Indonesia.

This spider has a large and strong web which has golden color. The female is much larger than male. The female size body alone is around 30mm to 40mm, while the male is only around 5mm.

According to wikipedia,the venom of the golden silk orb-weaver is potent but not lethal to humans. It has a neurotoxic effect similar to that of the black widow spider; however, its venom is not nearly as powerful. The bite causes local pain, redness, and blisters that normally disappear within a 24-hour interval.
