Crane Fly (Tipulidae sp)


Photos in this post were taken in Bengkulu Sumatra Indonesia. This giant mosquito-like insect is a crane fly. It is from the family of Tipulidae.





This crane fly has the appearance resemble to a mosquito, that's why some people still think it is really a giant mosquito. Infact, the crane fly is harmless to human. It doesn't bite or suck blood from our body.

This crane fly has brown color of body, the abdomen has narrow black bands. It has transparrent wing with brown veins. It has two small knobbed structures behind the wings which flapped rapidly and function as gyroscopes called halteres. The legs are long, almost 30mm each. The body size is about 25mm.
